Students and Seniors in Cyberspace is a Community Service Learning project which pairs 7th and 8th grade students with senior citizens from the District's communities.  Together the students and seniors explore the Internet, set up and manage e-mail accounts, and share the wonder and excitement of Cyberspace.

E-Mail

To set up an e-mail account at Yahoo, follow these steps:

*  Open Internet Explorer.
*  Type www.yahoo.com in the "address" bar.
*  At the top of the first screen, to the right of the Yahoo name, click the "Mail" button.
*  At the next screen, click "Get a free Yahoo mail account.
*  Under "Free Yahoo! Mail" click "Sign Up Now." You want to be sure to choose the free one, not "Mail Plus" or "Custom."
*  At the "Sign-up" screen you will fill out a form with information about yourself. First, create an ID and a password. At the end of the form Yahoo gives you a word in fuzzy lettering - you should type that word in the small box above the word. Finally, click "Submit this form."  If someone already has taken your ID name, Yahoo will prompt you to create another one.
*  Once you have successfully submitted the form, Yahoo will show you a "Welcome" screen. (5) Uncheck the "Install Yahoo Companion toolbar" box. The check-box is located below the "Continue to Yahoo Mail" button.
*  Click the "Continue to Yahoo Mail" button.
*  Yahoo will send you an e-mail about activating your account.

Managing Your E-mail Account

To read mail:

*  Open Internet Explorer.
*  Click the "Mail" button and sign in using your ID name and password.  Once you have signed in, you will see the Yahoo "Welcome" screen.
*  To check your mail, click the "Inbox" link under the "Welcome" greeting, OR click "Inbox" in the group of links to the left of the "Welcome" greeting, OR click the "Check Mail" button.
*  Under "Inbox" is a list of your e-mail messages.  Under "Sender" is the name of the person who sent the mail, and under "Subject" is the topic of the message.  To read the message click on the subject-title.

If you do not recognize the sender or you do not want to read the message, simply check the little box next to the sender's name and click the "Delete" button.

*  Your e-mail message appears in the middle of the screen.  When you have read it, you may choose to delete it, reply to it, or forward it to someone else.
       *  To delete - Click the "Delete" button.
       *  To reply - Click the "Reply" button.  The received message will appear and you will be able to type your reply in the space above it.  Then click "Send."
       *  To forward - Click the "Forward" button.  Type the e-mail address of the person to whom you wish to send the mail.  Click "Send."

To write mail:

*  Sign in to Yahoo Mail if you have not already done so.
*  Click the "Compose" button.  There is one at the Welcome screen as well as one at the Inbox screen.
*  In the "To" box, type the e-mail address of the person you want to send a message to.  If you want to send copies to others, type their e-mail addresses in the "cc" box.  Separate the addresses by commas.
*  Type your message in the large white box.
*  There are several editing features in the mail toolbar.
      The scissors, double papers, and clipboard = cut, copy, and paste.
      The two F's = change the font style.  The two A's = change the font size.
      The B, the I, and the U = Bold, Italicize, and Underline.
      The T = text color; the crayon = background color for selected words; the smile face = choices of emoticons to indicate your feelings as you write.
      The blue circle with the chain = hyperlinks, which are ways to link to websites on the Internet.
      The last four = text alignment, bulleted lists, left and right indents.
      The "stationery" button does not work with free Yahoo mail.
*  Click the "Send" button to send your mail.

The Address Book

Having a list of frequently-used e-mail addresses handy when you write your e-mail messages is a good idea. You won't even have to type the addresses in the "To" bar if you have your friends and relatives in your address book.

To create an address book:
*  Sign into Yahoo mail.
*  At the "Welcome" screen, click on "Addresses."
*  Then click "Add Contact."
*   You are given a form to fill in for each "contact" you wish to include.

     You really need only the person's name and his/her e-mail address. For example, in the "First name" box you might put "John" and in the "Last name" box "Doe." Skip the "Nickname" box if you wish, and in the "Email" box, type the e-mail address - johndoe@yahoo.com

*  Then click "SAVE AND ADD ANOTHER." A new form will appear and you may add another person to the address book.
*  When you are finished, click the "MAIL" button to leave the address book.
